The Moment Everything Changes

The moment they place your baby on your chest, everything stops.

Not the room. The room is still busy. Nurses moving in and out, machines beeping, voices somewhere in the background. But you can barely hear any of it anymore because none of it matters right now. What matters is this. This tiny person you have been carrying and protecting and talking to for nine months is finally here. And you can finally see them. Not just feel them kick or roll or settle in against your ribs at 2am. See them. Their face. Their hands. Their little eyes trying to find yours for the very first time.

And then you get to hold them. This baby. This little honey. And I don't think I even have the words for what that feels like, and honestly I don't think I need them. Because any mother reading this already knows. You never noticed how empty your arms felt until they placed your baby there for the first time. And the way they fit, so perfectly, like they were always supposed to be right there. While you are holding them the whole world gets very small and very quiet. It is just you and them. And you already know that nothing will ever be the same again.

And then they wheel you out of those hospital doors and you leave as someone completely new. But your body is still catching up. Still healing. Still figuring out its new normal. You look over at your husband and think I have never been a mother before and he has never been a dad before. But we are in this together and we will figure it out together. And just like that your new chapter begins.

Motherhood.

What I Want Every Mother to Know | Newborn Photographer in Broomfield Colorado

Something I hear from a lot of mothers is that stepping in front of a camera after having a baby can feel a little uncomfortable. And I get it because I have been there too. Every week your body was changing, growing, doing something incredible. Some days just getting comfortable in bed felt like a lot. And now you are finding a whole new normal, learning to live in your body again after birth.

But I want you to hear this. You are amazing. You created life. You carried a baby. You went through birth. That is something worth celebrating, even if your birth story did not go exactly as you planned, even if you labored longer than you thought you would , even if you are just completely exhausted. That strength is not going anywhere. It is going to show up in your everyday life in ways you have not even discovered yet.

That is why before I ever walk through your door I send every mother a blog I wrote about giving yourself permission to show up exactly as you are. No pressure. No performance. Just you.

And I also want you to know that I understand having someone walk into your home with a camera can feel a little strange. But I will always do my best to step into your space with peace and grace and give you the room to be exactly who you are.

And that is exactly the energy I brought with me when I walked through Taylor and Mason's door.

And that is exactly where Taylor found herself.

She was not sure at first that she wanted newborn photos. And I completely understand that. There is so much happening in those early weeks. You are tired and healing and just trying to figure out your new normal one day at a time. But then she looked at Reeves one morning and realized he was already changing. At five weeks, almost six, he was already different than he was the week before. The newborn clothes already outgrown. Those tiny feet that were tucked up so tight inside her belly, no longer curled up, already starting to stretch out and find their place. And she thought I don't want to lose this. I want to remember exactly what he looked like right now.

So she reached out. And I am so glad she did.

From the moment I walked through their door I could see it. Taylor was so sweet and so gentle with Reeves. The way she would pull him close to her, every pose felt completely natural, like she had always had him around. Like he had always been hers. There was no stiffness, no trying to figure it out. She just held him and loved him and it showed in every single frame.

And then there were the little moments in between. The ones you cannot plan for. Whenever Reeves would cry she would pull him in close and softly shush him, it's okay, it's okay, and just like that he would calm right down. Like he already knew her voice. Like it was the safest sound in the world to him. And the way she would run her thumb across his cheek, so softly, so full of love. I had my camera in my hands and I almost forgot to take the photo because I just wanted to watch.

That is what I mean when I say watching a woman become a mother for the first time is something I will never get over. That overwhelming love that hits you and does not let go. You could feel it in that room.

You could see it in every single thing she did.

Next to Every Strong Mother

And then there was Mason.

One of my favorite things about a newborn session is getting to capture the whole family. Because next to every strong mother is a strong father there to love and protect his family. And there is something especially powerful about photographing a dad with his son.

Because we all know that bond is something else entirely. I have three boys of my own and the way my husband loves on them, the bond they have built together, it pulls at my heart every single time. Sons grow up looking at their dads and thinking I want to be just like him. That is not something that happens overnight. It starts right here, in these early days, in these quiet moments that go by faster than any of us are ready for.

Mason told me that as much as he loves this newborn stage he cannot wait until Reeves is older. Middle school, high school, the years where you really get to know each other. He is already excited for the relationship they are going to build together. And I just sat there behind my camera thinking that little boy has no idea how loved he already is.

The Little Honey Who Stole The Show

And then there was Reeves!

That sweet little honey did not want to miss a single part of his newborn session. He was awake for most of it and it did not worry me for even a minute. He was the sweetest, happiest little guy. I remember talking to him and his eyes would just light up and give me the best expressions I have ever seen. He gave me the biggest smile every time I said hi to him. But when his dad would come in to help get him adjusted he absolutely lit up. And whenever Taylor would speak he would follow her voice like he already knew exactly where home was.

This might honestly be the biggest gallery I have ever delivered. Because he just kept giving me more and I could not bring myself to keep a single one from his parents. Every face, every expression, every little moment deserved to be remembered.

And that is what a newborn session is all about to me. Capturing them right where they are. Not perfection. Not perfect posing. Just following their lead and letting them show you who they already are.

Because watching Reeves light up for his mom and his dad reminded me of something I truly believe with my whole heart. God did not just give Taylor and Mason a baby. He chose Reeves specifically for them. He knew exactly what he was doing when he placed that little boy in that family.

Every Photo Tells The Whole Story

The child you are raising. The mother you are becoming. And the father who was already dreaming about who his son would be.

Because one day Reeves is going to crawl into his parents' laps and ask what did I look like when I was a baby. And they get to pull out these photos and say here, let me show you. Here is how much we loved you before you even knew what love was.

And Mason, one day you are going to look at your son and say I remember when you were so tiny I could hold you in one arm. I couldn't wait for the days we would get to hang out like we do now.

Mason and Taylor, thank you for letting me step into your home and capture this new chapter. Parenthood is hard and exhausting and it is also going to be the best time of your life. Soak up every single moment of it. All of it matters.

Love, Rachel
