The Journey Doesn't End at Delivery

The minute you get a positive test, it begins: all the doctor's appointments, the growing belly, uncomfortable maternity pants, and swollen feet. Then comes the anticipation of labor, and after all of that, they place your beautiful baby on your chest. You sigh with relief and thank God you're done being pregnant.

As a Westminster Colorado motherhood photographer, I've sat with so many moms in this exact moment — and what comes next is something nobody fully prepares you for.

Welcome to Your New Reality

But it's not over yet—you have that fourth trimester of healing and adjusting to your new normal. Except life isn't normal anymore. You have this little baby who is all-consuming in all the best ways: the way they smell, how tiny they are, and how your heart feels like it might burst from loving someone so completely and fiercely.

The Emotional Roller Coaster

The fourth trimester is a roller coaster of emotions. Whether you breastfeed, exclusively pump, or formula feed, it's all so much work and takes a toll on your body and mind.

If you're pumping, it feels like a full-time job—constantly thinking about when you need to do it next, where you can do it, and how to store your milk properly. You worry about everything you eat and drink, wondering if you're having enough water or if that extra cup of coffee will affect your supply. Before you make any plans, you have to calculate: when did I last pump? When will I need to again? Can I bring my equipment? It's exhausting, but hey — at least your grocery bill isn't reflecting formula prices!

As a Westminster Colorado motherhood photographer, I see this season up close all the time, and I want you to know — what you're carrying is real and it's a lot.

Permission to Let Things Go

I want to remind you of a few important truths: it's okay to sit down with dishes piling up in the sink and watercolor paint streaked across the hardwood floors from your older kids' afternoon art session—the paint you keep glancing at, making mental notes to clean up later. The laundry will get done eventually, but right now, you need to rest! Your body went through incredible work, and now it's time to heal.

Embrace Rest and Ask for Help

Watch that TV show you've been wanting to catch up on. Read that book that's been collecting dust on your nightstand. Take naps all day long—because you deserve it, mama! And remember, it's so important to ask for help when you need it. Reach out to your family and friends when you're feeling overwhelmed or lonely. I promise they will show up for you.

I wish someone had told me earlier that asking for help doesn't mean you can't handle being a mom—it means you're being smart about taking care of yourself. A lot of moms struggle with postpartum emotions, and I was one of them. Sometimes we need someone to bring us dinner, hold the baby while we shower, or just sit with us when everything feels too heavy. It's not about being weak; sometimes we just need to ask for help, and that's actually being brave.

Healing Takes Time

The work of healing isn't something you can rush. Take the time your body and mind need, and don't pressure yourself to bounce back on anyone else's timeline. Trust me—I'm speaking to myself here too.

We're all learning to give ourselves grace and remember that we don't have to be perfect or carry this alone. Motherhood was meant to be lived in community, leaning on each other.

And as a Westminster Colorado motherhood photographer, it's why I show up for moms not just with a camera — but with a whole lot of understanding for this season.
