Say What Now?

During our session I overheard Christian whisper to Morgan — "after this my brother is coming over and we are going to look for beavers with our binoculars because that is the only time they come out, at night."

I put my camera down and just started laughing. I said — you are looking for WHAT after this?

Honestly it was the best way to start a session. Everyone relaxed, the nerves were gone, and just like that we were off. And I have to be honest — for the rest of the session every time I needed them to loosen up or give me a real smile I just said "do it for the beavers." Works every time apparently.

Meet Christian + Morgan

I actually met Christian and Morgan at a young adult group we all used to go to — all of us a little unsure of ourselves and just trying to figure out who we were in the world after high school. It is so fun to see how much we have all grown since then. Christian and Morgan are just the sweetest people and I always love getting to catch up.

One of my favorite things to do during a session is ask questions — it keeps things feeling fun and relaxed and honestly it is just so good to catch up with people you do not get to see very often. I always love asking how people chose their baby's name. And when I asked Christian and Morgan about Violet — Christian said he was just driving one day and it popped into his head out of nowhere. He loved it. And then Morgan brought it up to him separately — she had been thinking the same thing. They both just knew. I just love how that happened for them.

Maternity Photos in Boulder Colorado — I Love This Location

Morgan had picked our location straight from the location guide I send all my clients — and she chose well. When we pulled up the wind was already picking up and I was secretly hoping it would work in our favor. Here in Colorado we pretty much skipped right over spring and went straight into summer — but that day the air was warm and cozy and the wind added just the right amount of cool breeze to make everything feel perfect.

The sounds of the road were loud behind us but once we got into the session it felt like we were the only ones there. Just us, the mountains, and the most incredible golden hour light.

This spot is one of my absolute favorites for maternity photos in Boulder Colorado because of the way the sun hits and creates the most beautiful backlighting. When that light starts doing its thing I honestly cannot help myself — I start talking really fast and really loud and my sentences can barely keep up with how excited I get.

The Pink Dress & the Spin

Morgan started the session in the most beautiful pink maxi dress that highlighted her baby bump perfectly. It was soft and feminine and she looked absolutely stunning in it. We eased into it with a few belly shots first — because honestly the first few minutes of any session most people are still shaking off the nerves and I always want my clients to feel relaxed and like themselves before we really get going.

We did so many beautiful poses throughout the session but one of my absolute favorites was having Christian spin Morgan and then pull her into a kiss. The first couple of tries were a little wobbly but after a few rounds they were total professionals.

And those shots — you can just feel the love and the connection coming right through. That is exactly what I am always chasing.

The White T Shirt & the Baby's Breath

Morgan then changed into her second outfit and I have to say — there is something about a white t shirt and jeans on a pregnant mama that I absolutely love. It is simple and real and it showcases the belly in the most beautiful way. Because even though our bodies are changing so fast and we do not always feel our most comfortable, we want to remember how much we loved that bump. And Morgan looked absolutely stunning.

This is where we really got into the detail shots and I tried something a little different this time. I had grabbed the baby's breath out of my bag and right when the sun hit that perfect peak of golden hour I had Christian hold it up so we could catch the shadows falling across Morgan's belly. The light was hitting just right, the breeze was moving through the baby's breath, and everything felt still and golden and perfect in that moment. I was so excited — I just know those are going to be some of her favorite maternity photos in Boulder Colorado from the whole session.

Wrapping Up and the Date Night We May Have Interrupted

A maternity session is so much fun but I also know that two hours on your feet when you are pregnant can feel like a long time. I always set aside two hours for my sessions but we do not always have to use all of it — because I get it. When I was pregnant all I wanted to do was go home and curl up on the couch.

So we wrapped up our session, I gave them both a big hug goodbye, and as I was walking to my car I glanced over at the cars next to us and it looked like a couple was on a little date night at the mountain lookout. And I just thought — I really hope my loud excited personality did not ruin their romantic evening.

Before I left I turned back and said — good luck with the beavers! And I can just picture Christian out there in the dark with his binoculars searching for them. I am definitely going to have to check in and see if they actually found any.
