Nobody Warned You About This Part
You are sitting on the floor of your bedroom in the soft golden light of late afternoon, a pile of your favorite jeans spread out around you. You pick up a pair and run your hands along the seams and just stop for a second — you remember how good you felt in these. You fold them slowly and place them into a bucket labeled "pre-baby clothes" — because honestly you are not sure if you will ever fit into them again.
Your body is already changing faster than you expected. You get up, already a little out of breath, and stand in front of the mirror. You turn to the side and just look. Your hands find their way to your growing belly and you wrap them around it slowly — you just never expected to feel this way about your own body.
You run your fingers along your hips and lower stomach where the stretch marks have shown up almost overnight, dark red lines that seemed to appear out of nowhere. You do not want to sound ungrateful — you are so grateful — but nobody warned you about the emotional toll it would take on the way you see yourself. You cry a little. And then you push that thought down too.
Nobody Really Talks About This Part of Pregnancy
A few weeks later you get invited to dinner at a friend's house. You stand in front of your closet and start pulling things out one by one — maybe this top, maybe this dress — but nothing feels right. Nothing fits the way it used to. There is a pile growing on the bed behind you and you are getting more frustrated by the minute. Finally you reach for the same maternity leggings and baggy tshirt you have been living in and just pull them on. A part of you wants to just stay home and lay in bed. But you go anyway.
You are sitting at dinner, finally feeling a little more like yourself, when someone at the table turns to you and asks — so are you going to get maternity photos done? You smile. You brush it off. "Oh yeah, I don't know."
Because how do you stand in front of a camera when you feel like a stranger in your own body?
This Is Why Maternity Photos Matter
And I think most women feel exactly this way. They just do not say it out loud because it feels vulnerable and it is hard to admit how you are really feeling when everyone around you is saying "pregnancy is the best!" And yes — pregnancy is the best. It is a miracle. But it is also exhausting and it takes an emotional toll on your body in ways nobody really prepares you for. And that is not easy.
Nobody really prepares you for that part. So when someone asks if you are going to get maternity photos done and you smile and brush it off — I see you. I know what that smile is covering up.
And that is exactly why maternity photos matter. Not because you have to feel your best to be in them. Not because your body has to look a certain way. These photos are not about capturing you at your best — they are about capturing you exactly as you are in one of the most real and raw seasons of your entire life.
It Goes Faster Than You Think
And it is okay that you feel like a stranger in your own body right now. It is okay that you cannot stop eating burgers and fries because that is literally all you are craving and you have just accepted it at this point.
But here is the thing about this season — it goes so fast. One day you are waddling through the grocery store, one hand on your back, stopping every few minutes because your feet are so swollen your shoes barely fit. You are using your belly as a little shelf for your snacks and your phone and honestly anything else you can balance up there. And then just like that — the day comes. You deliver your baby and you are finally on the other side of it.
And then you look down.
Your belly feels empty and cold and strange in a way you were not expecting. You run your hand over it and you feel it — that unexpected pang of missing something you could not wait to be done with. And you think — wait. I kind of miss that bump. Maybe it was not so bad after all.
That is why maternity photos matter. Because your body did something absolutely incredible. The baby who rolled around at midnight when they should have been sleeping. The kicks that took your breath away right in the middle of a conversation. The 3am bathroom trips you swore would never end. All of it — even the hard parts — is worth remembering.
You are going to want to remember all of it.
You Deserve to Remember This
Because here is what I know to be true — when you look back at your maternity photos someday, you are not just going to see a bump. You are going to feel everything. The way the air felt that day. How you could not wait to meet them. The way your whole life was right on the edge of changing forever. You are not going to remember that you felt uncomfortable or that nothing fit right or that you cried a little in the mirror that one afternoon. You are going to remember how it felt to carry them. How it felt to be the whole world to someone who had not even arrived yet.And you are going to be so glad you have something to hold onto.
Why maternity photos matter has nothing to do with looking perfect. They are not about having the right outfit or the perfect body or feeling your most beautiful. They are about being seen exactly as you are — messy and uncomfortable and absolutely incredible all at the same time.
You did something incredible, And you deserve to remember it.
